Course Description

You'll already be a hillwalker, have done some mountain walking and want to extend your journeys into the mountains for more than one day. As part of the five days we will follow our tried and tested Mountain Skills syllabus for Monday and Tuesday which covers planning, weather, navigation, hazards and emergency procedures, route choice, access and the environment and much more. The rock climbing day on Wednesday is aimed at beginners but can also be a refresher for some and a chance to rest the legs before we head out for an overnight expedition for the fourth and fifth days. We will cover planning for an expedition, campcraft, including how to erect a tent, use a stove and look after yourself outdoors. We finish at a local cafe to review the week, have a light lunch, which is included, and head home mid afternoon on Friday.

You'll need to bring your own outdoor clothing including rucksack, suitable boots and waterproofs as well as your own sleeping bag for the expedition. Please bring your own snacks and drinks each day. This is an instruction only course so no food or accommodation is included apart from those as part of the expedition phase.

You are welcome to bring your own tent, stove, fuel and cooking utensils but they must fit into the expedition rucksack along with your normal items you would carry in a day rucksack such as hat, gloves, waterpoofs etc. Contact us if you are unsure.

Full details will be given once your booking is made and additional information is also available in our terms and conditions which can be downloaded.

You are welcome to contact us for advice or if you have any questions prior to booking.

We require 2 persons booked on to the course for it to proceed.

Note: All our staff are qualified, insured, experienced and hold current first aid qualifications.

Course Schedule

  • Day 1 - You'll meet your instructor at 9am, check kit and discuss the week's activities then head out for your first mountain day. We'll discuss planning, weather and introduce navigation skills. Finish around 5pm.
  • Day 2 - A busy and long mountain day with plenty of navigation practise, easy scrambling and other skills. Finish around 5pm
  • Day 3 - A rock climbing day aimed at introductory level. We'll also visit a local outdoor shop to look at different climbing and outdoor equipment. Finish around 3pm so you can prepare for the overnight expedition.
  • Day 4 / evening - Meet at 9.30am and head out on the expedition. We will spend the night in the mountains learning about campcraft. If conditions allow we may have an introduction to night navigation.
  • Day 5 - an early start will see us leave the campsite and begin our journey back to a local cafe where we will have a light lunch and discussion about future adventures before departing for home mid afternoon.
